ExpLife for cities and tourism

Get visitors out exploring.

ExpLife's travel mode turns a visit into a game. Everyone's map starts under fog, and every street they walk clears it and earns points. Partner cities and organizations add trails of their landmarks and goals of their own, so people go further and find the places you want them to see.

What partners add

Your places, on everyone's map

For tourism offices and visitor bureaus, downtown and main street groups, parks departments, campuses, museums and venues.

Trails

Pick three or more landmarks, venues or viewpoints and give the walk a name. The trail shows up for people exploring within a distance you choose, up to 100 km, and each stop stays hidden in the fog until they get close. Visitors earn 25 points a stop and, for finishing, a badge named after your trail.

City goals

Every city already has goals for exploring 25, 100 and 250 squares of it. Add up to 10 of your own, worth 5 to 250 points each, such as uncovering 500 squares of your city. Everyone who explores there sees them.

Landmarks and venues

Put your landmarks on the map, each with how close counts as being there, from 50 m to 2 km. Venues such as stadiums and arenas also let people check in when they log a game or event there.

How it works

From your ideas to a live trail

  1. Tell us about your city

Email us with your city or organization and the places you'd like people to find.

  2. Get partner access

Your team gets partner access inside the ExpLife app, where you draft trails, landmarks and city goals. No code and no spreadsheets.

  3. We check and publish

We look over every draft with you, then put it live.

  4. Visitors find it

People exploring nearby with travel mode on see your trail appear, and your goals show up as soon as they're in your city.

We made ExpLife's first two trails ourselves, in Eugene, Oregon: Downtown and the river, five stops from the Hult Center to Alton Baker Park, and Track Town, four stops from Hayward Field to Pre's Trail.

Built to be trusted

Real visits, and visitors' privacy kept

Points only count when people really go there, and nobody's movements are on show.

  • Stops are checked on the spot. A visit counts only with an accurate location inside the stop, and faked locations are turned away.
  • Points for getting around on foot. New ground only earns points at walking, running or cycling speeds.
  • Private by design. ExpLife never keeps anyone's route or exact location. Nobody, partners included, sees who walked a trail or where they went.
  • Off unless people choose it. Travel mode reads location only while ExpLife is open, and switches itself off after 12 hours.
  • Fit for everyone 13 and up. Trails and goals can't promote alcohol, tobacco or vaping, cannabis, gambling, weapons or adult products.
